Bampton Gallery: Upholstery |
![]() |
Kate has a workshop associated with The Bampton Gallery where she works restoring antique furniture.I completed a diploma course at The Traditional Upholstery Workshop and have now been working for 10 years. I use traditional methods and materials and am very happy for you to come and watch me at work, when I can explain techniques and you can see what is involved. I can supply foam cushions but any other stuffing uses natural fibres. In seats and most backs and arms there are two stuffings, first I use a treated plant fibre but the top stuffing always hair. I can supply upholstery materials anything from tacks to scrim and calico, as well as a range of upholstery fabrics. In the increased space now available, I also teach (see below). Visit this web-site to keep
up with progress and see how much is involved in Traditional Upholstery.

Anne is working on a gentleman's library chair, the back is iron framed so we bound the frame in hessian and all the layers have to be sewn onto it. It has had 2 layers of stuffing and Anne is now pinning the calico in place. |
Anne now covers the calico with Dacron and the top material |
Sarah has nearly finished the back of this button back arm chair, she is tying the top cover down into where the buttons will go. |
Sheila is stripping this modern wing back chair, we shall be using more traditional methods than the original. |
Stella has now completed this pretty little button back chair, here the back is on and the buttons are in, the top cover is being put on the seat. |
