Bampton Gallery: Upholstery

Kate has a workshop associated with The Bampton Gallery where she works restoring antique furniture.

I completed a diploma course at The Traditional Upholstery Workshop and have now been working for 10 years.

I use traditional methods and materials and am very happy for you to come and watch me at work, when I can explain techniques and you can see what is involved. I can supply foam cushions but any other stuffing uses natural fibres. In seats and most backs and arms there are two stuffings, first I use a treated plant fibre but the top stuffing always hair.

I can supply upholstery materials anything from tacks to scrim and calico, as well as a range of upholstery fabrics.

In the increased space now available, I also teach (see below). Visit this web-site to keep up with progress and see how much is involved in Traditional Upholstery.

Kate Russell at work

Anne

Anne is working on a gentleman's library chair, the back is iron framed so we bound the frame in hessian and all the layers have to be sewn onto it. It has had 2 layers of stuffing and Anne is now pinning the calico in place.

Anne

Anne now covers the calico with Dacron and the top material

Sarah

Sarah has nearly finished the back of this button back arm chair, she is tying the top cover down into where the buttons will go.

Sheila

Sheila is stripping this modern wing back chair, we shall be using more traditional methods than the original.

Stella

Stella has now completed this pretty little button back chair, here the back is on and the buttons are in, the top cover is being put on the seat.
